Valparaíso is an important city of Chile as it is one of that country's most important seaports; the city has served as a major stopover for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans by crossing the Straits of Magellan in the 19th century.  The city is located in central Chile and houses the National Congress although Santiago is the national capital. Valparaíso is rich in architecture and culture and hence was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
