Description:
After a recent renovation, the Afamia is arguably Damascus' best value mid-range hotel. With comfortable, well-equipped rooms, friendly and accommodating staff, and a central location, it's hard to think of a reason for staying anywhere else. Oh, of course unless you can't get in - book ahead!
Centrally located behind the main post office and mid-way between the Old City and the New Town, this makes a great location for exploring both. The Classic Rooms are still un-renovated but come with satellite TV, fridge, air conditioning and hairdryer, but, for a little extra you can take a renovated Executive Room, with the same amenities, plus rather swish new carpets, curtains, lamp shades and bedspreads, spiffy new bathrooms, flat screen TVs, and complimentary ADSL Internet. The hotel is extremely comfortable and deservedly popular with groups of European travellers who can often be found enjoying a beer (BYO) in the enormous mezzanine lounge at the end of a day's sightseeing. And the friendly hands-on owner, Mamdouh Akbik, can probably be found chatting to guests and making sure everyone's happy. A Damascus hotel owner who cares is indeed a rare species!
