Sant Antoni de Portmany

Sant Antoni de Portmany is a town in the western coast of the island and is the second largest town and municipality in Ibiza. Before the clubbers consider this town as the clubbing capital of the world, the town was a small fishing village until 1950s. Later as the tourism spurt in Spain this place grew with many resorts and hotels getting developed here. However, in 1980s the place was known for the notorious holidays of the rowdy football teams and the tourism went down. But as Ibiza gained its name in 1990s as the best clubbing place, San Antonio, as called in English also became popular again.

The Egg

The Egg

Sant Antoni is a place claimed to be the birth place of Christopher Columbus where in 1990s his memorial was built and titled as “The Egg”. The story behind this title goes like this, When Columbus was seeking funding for his trip to Indies, and he was told that getting money for this route was unfeasible. He then took a bet of making an egg stand upright which was considered impossible. However, he won the bet by cracking the base of an egg making it stand upright and got his funding. To commemorate this story, his memorial is built in the shape of an egg with a model of his ship in the centre.
