Keren

Keren was formerly called Cheren, it is a beautiful town and is often visited by those wanting a change of scene from Asmara or Massawa. The name Keren means highland. it is the second largest city in Eritrea, Keren was the site of a key battle between Italian and British troops in 1941. Keren is a mountainous city, the majority of the populations are Muslim and there is a distinctly Muslim feel to the town.

Tigu is a nineteenth century Egyptian fort and now a major tourist attraction in Keren.

St Maryam Dearit Chapel

There are quiet a few religious structures in Keren like the St Maryam Dearit Chapel, Debra Sina Monastery, Romanesque Catholic church, shrine of St Maryam Dearit and more, Keren also possesses stylish colonial architecture and thus has many an architectural monuments also like ruins of the old Imperial Palace, Giro Fiori and more.
