Monument to Vasil Levski

 

Monument to Vasil Levski

The Monument to Vasil Levski is located in the centre of Sofia, it is one of the first monuments to be built in the then newly-liberated Bulgaria. The monument is 13 m high, made of grey Balkan granite and designed by Czech architect Antonín Kolar. A draft for the monument featured a large Christian cross over a crescent, but it was rejected as religiously intolerant and in order not to irritate the Ottoman Empire. Other plans included a full-length bronze statue of Levski, which however was turned down as too expensive.

National Palace of Culture Congress Centre

The National Palace of Culture is located in Sofia, it was opened in 1981, in July 2005, the National Palace of Culture was proclaimed the best congress centre in the world for the year by the International Organization of Congress Centers. The National Palace of Culture has 13 halls and 15,000 m² of exhibition area, a trade centre and a car park.
