The Targhee National Forest is one of the most visited forests in US. Targhee National Forest spreads across three states of Idaho, Utah and Wyoming and covers a total area of ten thousand sq km. The Yellow Stone National park and the Grand Teton national park are both present inside the boundaries of the forest. Targhee National Forest has varied landscapes like there is sandy terrain, timbered land, hills and peaks but most of the land is plain solid land. As is landscape there are also contrasts in climate and temperature, in winter it can dip to as low as 0 degree centigrade and in summer it can be around 50 degree centigrade. This divergence in land and weather conditions combined with many water streams in the area makes this place a natural habitat for many a species.  

 

 

The Eastern border has two wilderness areas with high grass, whereas on the western border of forest one can see a number of bears, dears and pronghorns. Wolfs and elks are other animals which can be seen in the area. The Targhee National Forest is also being used for conservation and study of birds specially falcons. The Targhee National Forest is also famous as a great fishing place and it is also considered as one of the best fishing spot in US. Majority of the Targhee national forest is located in Eastern Idaho and the local government has made local ranger district offices in Dubois, Driggs and Ashton to facilitate the visitors.

There are two main trails entering into the forest. One can venture out at ones own but it is advised to take some guidance before hand. One must visit the ranger offices in order to get latest updates. Although there is not much of danger in the forest but some time things can go out of hand due to carelessness. The Targhee National Forest is one of the best options for an outdoor vacation having different peaks, streams, lakes and waterfalls to enjoy.

One can also take a guided tour of the forest. If one is not much inclined on having an adventure journey and is just looking for an educational tour then a guided tour is the best option. The top destinations in Targhee National Forest are Cave Falls, Warm River Campground, Lower Mesa Falls, Upper Mesa Falls, Warm Springs, Bear Gulch Trailhead and more.
