Rwanda is a small country in the continent of Africa; it is a beautiful place having many natural attractions and sights. Rwanda is in Central Africa so is landlocked and not near the sea. The beauty of nature here is remarkable and one will have to visit Rwanda to experience it and believe it. The main cities of this country are the Butare, Byumba, Gisenyi, Kibungo and Ruhengeri and of course Kigali which is the capital of Rwanda. To visit these cities the best way is to take any road transport so that you can enjoy the scenery on the way. One can take a taxi, hire a car, take bus or take a minibus. The main languages spoken here are Kinyarwanda, French, English and Kiswahili. |

A place of interest in Kigali is the Genocide Museum which has the documents pertaining to the 100-day massacre of 1994. If you move towards east of the country you will reach Kibungu. It is a region of lakes and waterfalls including Lake Mungesera and the Rumuso Falls. Gissenyi is the main centre for excursions in the Parc des Volcans and is a relaxing retreat for swimming, canoeing and water-skiing. One can take a plane from here to view the craters. Lake Kivu offers many opportunities for water sports or for excursions on the lake. It is like a giant inland sea with some interesting lakeside towns. Kibuye, down south is another lakeside resort and near Cyangugu on the southern shores of the lake are the magnificent grottoes of Kaboza and Nyenj. There are also the thermal waters at Nyakabuye while the Rugege forest has many rare species of wildlife.
Another attraction is the Mountains Gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans. There are three national parks in the region of the Virunga Conservation Area. They are the Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in Rwanda and Parc des Virungas, commonly called Djomba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Parc National des Volcans there are five habituated gorilla families. After this one can visit Akagera which has beautiful undulating plains with dense, broad-leafed woodland, lighter acacia woodland and rolling grassland with an extensive series of lakes linked by papyrus swamps forming a sprawling wetland. The game in the park includes elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, lions and different antelope. Rwanda can be visited throughout the year. Gorilla tracking and other forest walks are less demanding during the drier months. The European winter is the best time for birds, as Palaearctic migrants supplement resident species. One will need a certificate of yellow-fever vaccination to enter the country. There is good infrastructure of roads in Rwanda and there is not much traffic on these roads so they offer wonderful opportunities for long bicycle trips across the verdant hills and valleys. Mountain biking and hiking can be enjoyed on these fine rural trails linking remote villages, criss-crossing the entire country. There are many types of accommodations to be found in Rwanda. The hotels are found mostly in Kigali and they are expensive but there are other new hotels in Rwanda at reasonable prices. Missions with dormitory accommodations are also available particularly in remote districts and smaller towns.
