Aspen a sleepy mining town was transformed to a bustling and recreational nook by a group of entrepreneurs when they came to realize its potential and the inexhaustible supply of snow. An Austrian entrepreneur named Friedl Pfeifer and Walter Paepcke, a Chicago industrialist, and his wife Elizabeth opened what was known then as the world’s longest chairlift in the winter of 1947. Later, more Aspen ski vacation resorts were opened, followed by a number of hotels and vacation rentals and thus transforming Aspen into a Mecca for ski enthusiasts.
The Aspen Mountain, known as Ajax has more than 3,200 vertical feet on 700 ski able acres. Then the Aspen Highlands provides a respectable level of novices as well as intermediate terrain. The Buttermilk is a smaller, novice-oriented mountain. Finally, there is the Snowmass, which is the largest of the four Aspen ski vacation mountains; it is best-known for its having a greatest variety for all levels with over 3000 acres of ski terrain. Just like the other mountains, this Aspen ski vacation spot has spectacular views. Combining the four Aspen gives you the widest variety of skiing and snowboarding in Colorado.
The ski trails and ‘dump’ runs in Ajax have strange names like Bear Paw, Zaugg Dump, Last Dollar, Perry's Prowl and Short Snort. These entire dump runs are fairly short, sharp and challenging, some are built on the steep mountain slopes where gold miners once tunneled their way into the mountain in search of the precious metal. The newcomers of skiing are discouraged from skiing at Ajax as getting off the mountain at the end of the day can be a very daunting experience. Generally maximum skiing is done at the top of the mountain but the main ski slopes such as the Cooper Bowl and Spar Gulch have fast and furious speed and the expert skiers in Aspen Colorado move their way down in dizzying speed, the gentler ski area at the Buttermilk is a better choice for novice skiers and beginners.
The Aspen Highlands is Aspen’ real attraction, it is the only one of the four ski resorts in Aspen that is independently owned. The Highlands had developed a reputation for being the most challenging and yet the cheapest and least expensive resort in the Roaring Fork Valley. However the hard core skiers will go to the ski lift system to take them to the breathtaking steep slopes of Aspen Highland’s Olympic Bowl, Steeple Chase and Temerity, skiing exhilarating runs like Mushroom, Aces and Eights and Deception which starts steep and gets steeper along the way.
