Sex Tourism

Travel is believed to be about visiting destinations, experiencing different culture, enjoying local cuisines and music and expanding one’s horizons but one more activity which motivates a number of travelers is having sex. It’s no secret that many travelers have sex on ‘there things to do list’ while traveling specially when traveling to destinations that are famous for the same. Sex Tourism thus is traveling for the purpose of having sex. Sex tourism in not about hooking up with a fellow traveler of other gender, that can be classified as romance travel or a holiday fling. Sex tourism is about strip clubs, red-light areas, prostitution dens, sex shows or visiting individual prostitutes thus it is about paid sex. Sex Tourism can be classified into many sub categories such as adult sex tourism, female sex tourism, child sex tourism, gay sex tourism and more.

There are many destinations that are on the radars of a sex tourist but Southeast Asia especially Thailand probably will be numero uno. Other destinations around the planet that are hub for sex tourism are in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Cuba and Kenya. Strangely prostitutions in illegal in many of these countries but authorities tend to look the other way around. Sex tourism has been undertaken by both males and females since many a decades and top destinations for a female sex tourist are Southern Europe (mainly Italy, Greece, Croatia, Turkey, and Spain), the Caribbean (led by Jamaica, Barbados and the Dominican Republic), parts of Africa (Tunisia, Gambia, Kenya), Bali, Pattaya or Phuket in Thailand, Nepal, Morocco, Fiji, Ecuador and El Salvador.

For many it is all about monetary power and economy but in reality sex tourism is a tragedy, for both the sex workers and for the people who pay them. Sex tourism brings along substance abuse, health, social and cultural consequences. For every sex worker who loves his or her job there are many who are smuggled, sexually abused and forced into the profession by pimps or even by their family members.  Not to forget the risk of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases that sex workers and their customers bring upon themselves. Sex tourism is probably illegal, unethical immoral and categories such child sex tourism are plain horrific.

The top red-light areas of the planet namely Amsterdam in the Netherlands; Zona Norte in Tijuana and Boy's Town in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico; Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil; Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket in Thailand; Vladivostok in Russian Far East and others have seen growth in travelers and increase in flesh trade. The reasons behind growth of sex tourism are probably that for sex tourists sex is available cheaper than at home or probably because of secrecy involved and the fact that they are miles away from home or just because of individual fantasies or the need to spice up ones life or to massage ones ego.
