Puglia is a region in southern Italy; the region is also known as ‘heel’ of the boot cause an aerial view of Puglia resembles it to a knee-high boot. Puglia is sometimes also called ‘Apulia’. Puglia was a favorite destination for past rulers of the region, as it was a good location to set up base and influence or control both the Adriatic and Ionian seas. These days it is a popular tourist destination because of its beautiful coastline and natural scenery, the landscape of Puglia is fantastic; generally it is flatland or low rolling hills having millions of century old olive trees. Puglia is a region having a unique culture, character, traditions and beauty. Puglia has a family based culture with the main focus on food and celebration, the culinary style is influenced by what is grown and raised on the land, olive oil and locals wine. Puglia has a long history featuring the Paleolithic to the Romans, from the Greeks to the Baroque treasures.

 

 

To reach Puglia one has to fly to three main airports the Bari-Palese, Brindisi and Foggia.  One will find good rail and road networks for train and bus journeys, one can also take a ferry from Bari and Brindisi in Greece There are many options available for accommodations in Puglia, one has a good choice of hotels, campsites and guesthouses, however for an offbeat experience stay in a castle or a trullo that are found in the Alberobello area. There are quite a lot of cities in Puglia that were trading centers with the rest of ancient Greece. Puglia was ruled by the Romans, then it was invaded by the Byzantines, then the Spanish, there influence can be seen still today.

There a lot of sightseeing attractions in Puglia region, it is beautiful and has lots of sightseeing areas. One site that stands out in Puglia is the area of Trulli; it is a World Heritage Site and is full of domed buildings, and a unique look. Another architecture delight is the Lecce; here one will get a feel of the Baroque attractiveness and 17th century architecture. Another site worth visiting is the San Giovanni Rotondo here one can visit the remains of ‘Santa Claus’ at the Church of St Nicholas.

The area of Puglia is vast and there are many shopping areas at different places, the cities and towns of Puglia not only have big department stores, but also unique small shops and supermarkets. The interiors and smaller parts of the region have some great shops selling souvenir and, arts and craft. The restaurants here offer mainly classic Mediterranean food. A popular tourist activity in Puglia is tasting fine wines. One can also enjoy plenty of fresh sea food here. Puglia offers a mixture of rich culture, traditional gastronomy, beautiful and natural landscape, coastline scenery and archaeology.
