Once it was found out by Weber there was no official Seven Wonders of the World. There was no list of wonders by any recognized bodies, he set up a website, put together an array of professionals like- architects, engineers and the like and started the process of nominating structures worldwide as potential ‘Wonders’. During the subsequent years, visitors to his site answered his call to vote and the nominees were pared to 77. Then they were short listed to 21. Finally seven were chosen amidst heavy voting. The new wonders were announced at a star-studded event in Lisbon, Portugal, that featured performances by Jennifer Lopez and Chaka Khan. The event was hosted by Oscar winners Hilary Swank and Ben Kingsley as well as Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu. The winners and the new ‘Seven Wonders of The World’ were:
• The Great Wall of China
• Petra in Jordan
• Brazil's statue of Christ the Redeemer
• Peru’s Machu Picchu
• Mexico’s Chichen Itza pyramid
• The Colosseum in Rome
• India’s Taj Mahal
Though the event caught peoples fantasy but the new wonders campaign has not been recognized by everyone The United Nations’ cultural organization, UNESCO has issued a statement saying it has “no link whatsoever” to the vote. Egypt’s top antiquities expert also objected to the list. As a result, the organizers struck up a compromise. The pyramids have been assured honorary status, in addition to the new seven wonders.
The original and the first Seven Wonders were so named by an ancient geek, Philon of Byzantium, and an ancient Greek, Antipater of Sidon. The ancient marvels were:
• The Great Pyramid of Giza
• The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
• The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
• The Colossus of Rhodes
• The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
• The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
• The Pharos of Alexandria (The Lighthouse of Alexandria)
The only remnant standing Ancient Wonder is the Great Pyramid. Rest all have been destroyed so cheers to the New Wonders of the World.
