Once when in Malaysia, Langkawi Island is just the destination that you would like to visit. This island is an archipelago of 104 islands situated towards the north western coast of Peninsular Malaysia; it is located at the site where the Straits of Malacca meets the waters of the Andaman Seas. The biggest of these islands is called Langkawi Island which is bigger than the Penang Island. The name Langkawi Island comes from Malay words Lang and Kawi, meaning brown eagle and local manganese stone respectively, during ancient times fisherman must have noticed eagle flying clutching manganese stones so the name Langkawi Island. There is a huge monument of a brown eagle clutching manganese stone. As there are many myths and legends connected with this island it is also known as Pulau Lagenda or Legendary Island.

The main attraction on this island is the virgin white sandy beaches here, these beaches have continental slopes and water is crystal clear here. There are many fabulous beaches here like the Pantai Kok, Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Datai and Burau Bay. Around the beaches many hotels and accommodation are available to suit every tourist’s budget. Then there are fun filled water sports activities. A very unique feature of this Island is the underwater World Langkawi, it is a marine showcase having both fresh and salt water fish and other forms of marine life, and it is located at Pantai Cenang, a beach on the island. This aquarium features more than 5,000 types of marine life, exhibited in more than 100 tanks of different sizes. The best part is a giant tank housing large marine species such as sharks, stingrays, groupers and green turtles, with a 15-metre tunnel for visitors to walk through and enjoy a spectacular view of the exhibits. There are even underwater gardens of weeds and sea plants having exotic fishes and exhibits of fossils and shells, the very interesting additions are the penguins.
The islands are also surrounded by various beautiful myths and legends, the people of this island believe them to be true so learning about the islands gives a nice flavor to ones visit. An intense sense of mystique and mystery surrounds the island and lends charm and intrigue to an otherwise quiet and calm façade. The most talked about legend is that of Mahsuri, who is said to have laid a curse on this island for seven generations. However now the time of curse is over and tourists throng this Island. The Island at present has many modern amenities and infrastructure while still retaining its traditional facade. You will find world-class resorts and golf courses along with traditional accommodation of chalets and rest houses side by side.
