Holidays in Corfu

Corfu also known as the Emerald Isle, the Garden of Eden and the Happy Isle offers a variety of activity for the holidaymakers. It has been described by Homer as a rich and beautiful land. Corfu has a mixture of large modern resorts, isolated fishing villages, myriad beaches ranging from loose pebbles to gorgeous sandy sweeps and hidden inlets along its coastline. In addition to all this it has wide fertile plains, towering mountains and a vast diversity of wildlife. Corfu is a nature lover’s paradise and one will come across 600 species of wild flowers, quite a few numbers of exotic birds like the pelicans and hoopoes, golden orioles and bee eaters and if you are lucky you will be able to see foxes and pine martens and wild tortoises.

The location of the Corfu Island is just off the West coast of Greece. It has a mild Mediterranean climate along with excellent beaches making it a popular destination for holidaymakers. As the weather here is hot in dry summers along with winter rain, it results in lush vegetation which mainly consists of olive trees. Being a Greek Island it has the usual fantastic beaches but that is not all, it also has abundant forest areas, olive trees and flowers and leads it to being a beautiful place with some magnificent scenery. The Island offers a wide variety of high quality resorts for every type of Corfu holiday requirement, whether it is young and lively nightlife or quiet scenic beauty.

Corfu also has some places of historical interest which are great places to visit. At the south of Corfu Town there is the archaeological museum having some fine archaic sculpture, it also consists of many items of Asian art like a selection of Chinese porcelain. It has the remarkable Lion of Menekrates, which is a unique and beautiful limestone animal sculpture which is over 2500 years old. Vagelistra Island can be visited by a boat trip from the west coast. The site of the Chapel of the Virgin Mary is spectacular and worth visiting. Another island worth visiting is the island you can see from Sfragitha where there is also a simple chapel. A trip to Pondikonisi is also recommended as the view from Kanoni of the two little islands below, Vlakherena and Pondikonisi is something that shouldn’t be missed.

There are many towns on the Corfu Island and the main town is a vibrant and cosmopolitan place that blends the influences of the island’s many colonists. To enjoy a vibrant nightlife head to Liston, here many of the cafés, bars and restaurants are situated. The main town consists of a handsome row of houses with arcades below. Kambiello is the oldest part of the town with maze of narrow lanes. Another place of interest is the Achillion which was built in 1891 by Elizabeth of Austria; it consists of an imposing building, strangely sited in the charming little village of Gastouri. There is a restaurant, museum and, in the evenings, a flourishing casino for you to enjoy. The holidays in Corfu are full of surprises and even cheap holidays to Corfu are full of richness; especially if you like to throw a little sightseeing into the sea, sun, sand and nightlife mix.
