Thimpu is the capital of Bhutan and the place not to be missed. It is the home to the revered Bhutanese Royal Family, the Royal government and Judiciary of Bhutan. Thimpu is most famous for its cultural tours, the major tourist attractions in Thimpu are the galleries, museums or places of historic interest but the blissful natural beauty of the Himalayas also attracts a lot of tourists to Thimpu. In Thimpu you will find Tashichhodzong built in 1641 which is a beautiful pink roofed fortress. The annual 5-day Tshechu festival is celebrated in Tashichhodzong. Dechencholing is the Royal palace, residence of members of the Royal family except the king. Another site not to be missed is Tangu Cherry a beautiful old monastery dating back to several hundred years. Thimpu’s shopping is also very exciting but don’t expect any shopping malls here. You will find exclusive beautiful and reasonable handicrafts items, skillfully woven shawls and decorated prayer wheels available for purchase.
Another town is Bhutan is Paro and has the distinction of having the only airport in Bhutan and is the gateway to the kingdom for most tourists. The most interesting place is Paro Dzong which overlooks the beautiful valley. It famous as the film “The Little Buddha” was shot here. You can enjoy the Buddhist festival held there which last for 3-5 days. These festivals are held to ward off evil spirits with colorful costumes, elaborate music, dances and plays, a truly unforgettable experience.
Other important towns in Bhutan are Punakha and Wangdue, Bhutan is also home for famous valleys like Phodrang, Chumey, Choekar, Tang and Ura and Phobjika valleys. Also Bhutan is renowned the world over for its bewitching beauty comprising of pretty paddy farms, majestic mountains and the ravishing rivers flowing through the towns of Paro, Thimpu and Punakha.
In Bhutan you won’t be able to find any domestic air service, helicopters or a single railway track, the only mode of conveyance is by road or on foot. The most cherished destination in Bhutan is Takshang Lhakang; it is the most sacred monastery in Bhutan. It is perched upon a rocky ledge with a sheer drop of almost 2, 400 feet. You will find the effort of taking the time to travel to this forgotten part of the world a worthwhile experience as you won’t find any place on Earth that feels so far removed from the stress and strain of modern life.
