Aurora Borealis or more commonly known as northern lights are a mesmerizing natural phenomenon that can be viewed at the north and south poles. The northern regions of our planet are the most convenient places to view the Aurora Borealis. Although theoretically the best places to observe the Aurora Borealis are the northern Greenland, the Scandinavian coast, Siberia and Alaska in the north and Antarctica in the south, of course in the south it is known as the Southern lights. It is not very easy to travel to many of these destinations so there are many cities in US, Canada and Europe from where this phenomenon can be observed. Rural places or someplace away from city, a place with little or no light and preferably a no moon or a relatively dark night forms a perfect setting to watch the northern lights. The Southern lights can also be seen from some places in Australia and New Zealand.

Aurora Borealis happen when where particles from the sun react with gases in our atmosphere. Technically speaking the sun gives out ions which are high energy charged particles, a cloud of such particles i.e. ions is called a plasma, this plasma travel in space at a speed of, sometimes more than 1000 kilometers per second to reach us. Now earth itself is a big magnet and has a magnetic field which is strongest at the poles and when particles from the plasma also known as solar winds enter into the earth's magnetic field and collide with gas atoms from the earth‘s atmosphere the result is the auroras. For long aurora borealis was believed to be simply sunlight being reflected off of the polar ice caps.
There are many myths and stories also associated with the majestic phenomenon. The phenomenon is named after the Roman goddess of dawn. The Eskimo used to believe that the lights are sprits in the sky playing catch with a walrus skull. Some people believed that the lights as flaming torches carried by travelers to the afterlife. The Aurora Borealis is seen many times as a green curtain of clouds and sometimes even in majestic purplish pink color. The array of colors can be all the colors of a rainbow but mostly consists of red, green, blue and violet which are constantly in motion. To understand the beauty of Aurora Borealis it has to be experienced and no description can do the phenomenon justice.
Peoples are so fascinated with this phenomenon that they go out of their way to plan specific aurora borealis vacations to witness these miracles of nature. It is also advisable as a knowledge guide can tell you the best times and locations for viewing the aurora borealis. Most popular cities to view aurora borealis are anchorage in Alaska, Yukon in Canada and Tromso in Norway. If you wish to see them on your own, plan your trip carefully.
