    Antarctica - Ultimate Wilderness

Antarctica travel

The Antarctic Peninsula is situated on the southern tip of the planet. It is a perfect example of where water, wilderness and wildlife combine with breath-taking perfection. Although this destination is not for everyone but it never fails to impress visitors with its royal beauty and vivid ice scenery. One can see towering White Mountains, sweeping glaciers and icebergs, in the background of this great scenery you will find abundant sea birds and marine mammals which reside here. Fin, Right and Minke whales, Leopard, Ross, Weddell and Crabeater seals are common here. Seabirds are abundant, including the Albatross, Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adelie penguins.

In addition to the continent’s ice caps and glacial scenery Antarctica has a sculpted blue wilderness with ice formations illuminated by the sun’s rays. It is most probably the ultimate wilderness polar diving location. The area has a rich marine invertebrate population and provides the opportunity to encounter polar wildlife including penguins, fur and leopard seals as well as a host of Antarctic fish. Some scientist and professionals have made a choice to live and work in Antarctica; though can be a lonely place without any population. One can view many miles of spectacular scenery there as the air is very clear. Wind blows at high speed, however the moment it stops blowing the predominantly white landscape offers an eerie silence. You feel like as if you are the only person on the planet.

Though totally inhospitable many valuable science and research work is undertaken here. What attracts anyone to such an inhospitable place?  Despite the valuable science and work that is undertaken here, not many would like to stay there. However the biggest attraction of the alien landscape is that it cannot be seen anywhere else on earth, which makes it quite tempting. In spite of of the barren wilderness and blanket white surroundings, there is no more fascinating place on earth, probably because it is so different. A very strange and one of its type experiences of Antarctica is the static icebergs. These static ice bergs are fixed in position by the frozen sea. During winter season the temperatures goes down and freezing sea slowly leave the icebergs immobile as they become trapped by the ice.  Till the next spring they are static and when rise in sea temperatures melt the frozen ocean these icebergs to set off once more for foreign shores.

The insignificant of human race can be felt when one stands next to a static iceberg which is the size of an office block.  The work of nature is quite an achievement as compared to our man made ones. Wherever you visit in Antarctica you will find the noise and commotion from the seal colonies, the calmness and tranquility of the large ice peaks floating by, not to mention their great booms as they continually crack under the sun. These all cannot be described but are to be seen to experience a completely unique atmosphere. Not the text book tourist destination, not for everyone but there really is nothing else quite like Antarctica.
